Slide Lecture: Sand in our Boots: Miami Beach During World War II

By Judith Berson-Levinson Between 1942 and 1945 more than 500,000 Army Air Corps service men and women were trained on Miami Beach. They claimed they had been sent to the “most beautiful boot camp in America.” Many got “sand in their boots” and vowed to return – and they did!

Rabbi Mayer Abramowitz describes this fascinating clandestine program “Bricha,” or “escape” in Hebrew, in which an estimated 250,000 Jewish refugees escaped to Palestine after the War.

Stella Suberman relates her personal experiences as she waited on Miami Beach for her fighter-pilot husband Jack to return from World War II, reflecting the times she lived through including rationing, antisemitism, and reactions to the war news.
